The next day broke cold and wet at Domaine St-Buvard.

Ever since Laurent had taken over handling the Nicole crisis, he had been unfailingly supportive and gentle with Maggie. He brought her coffee in bed and told her to take her time getting up, he would get the children to school.

After the police contacted Nicole’s school, it turned out that Nicole was staying at a friend’s house. As far as the police were concerned she wasn’t really missing.

When Maggie reached her mother in the morning, Elspeth was again maddeningly matter-of-fact. Nicole had finally called her grandmother and attempted to straighten out the whole mess.

After washing the breakfast dishes, Maggie began her day by calling Fiona Bellemont-Surrey’s assistant to cancel her interview.

Laurent felt strongly that Maggie needed to go home and sort out the problem with Nicole in person.

He booked her a flight to Atlanta for the next evening. It didn’t escape Maggie’s notice that her leaving would effectively ease tensions between them.

Laurent would be aware of that too of course.
