Notes:

• Unemployment rates of Germans and foreigners cannot really be compared since the basis for foreigners only consists of those in dependent employment plus those unemployed (thus self-employed persons are not considered, which is different for the German rate). On German unemployment statistics and its changes, cf. von Below 1999.

• Yugoslavia: until 1991 Socialist Federal Republik Yugoslavia (SFRY); 1992, former SFRY without Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia; from 1993 onward SFRY without Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia.

• 2000: For all of Germany, until then: only West Germany.
