Sex is paradoxically an ideal point that is distinguishable only through its materiality. It may be an “imaginary point,” as Foucault contends, but it is through sex that each individual gives himself access to his own intelligibility, his particularly body, and his identity (since it places sex in a certain historicity) (1978, pp. 155–156). Sex can therefore be seen as a marker of identity—even if defined as merely performative—but it is certainly more than a desire, urgency, resistance existing outside power and sexuality.
