Eyes as Coordinators

As a young woman, Sue had been desperate to get her driver’s license. The one thing she hadn’t practiced was night driving, but because she had done everything else, she didn’t think she needed to worry too much. Her cousin Gus disagreed, so out they went in his old car to a very quiet suburb after dark. Sue was driving well, until there was oncoming traffic. Three times Gus had to quickly correct her steering, before he asked her to pull over to the side of the road. “So where are you looking when a car is coming?” he asked her. “At that car of course,” she replied, as if it was a dumb question. “Well every time you look at an oncoming car, our car starts heading toward it! So where do you think you should look?”

This shocked Sue and jogged an old memory of learning to ride a bike. She had constantly ridden into poles and holes until she had learned to keep her eyes on the path she wanted to follow, and not on the obstacle she wanted to avoid. Now it appeared she had fallen into the old habit of looking where she didn’t want to go—the oncoming traffic. She had to make a concerted effort to look at the very center of the lane ahead of her. Sue did get the hang of night driving and did get her license. She has continued to notice how often in life people are coached to keep their eye on the ball, or the target, or the finish line, or the prize. The role of the eyes in coordinating muscles for movement has become an abiding interest for her, influencing her choices in further studies.

Of course we can only coordinate that which is ready to cooperate. No leader can guide a team if the members are not willing or able to work together. The microcosm of our own bodies is no different.
