Hitler argues that Jews are the race with the cunning talent of melding into other nations, disguising their alien being and subverting the purity and unity of the Fatherland:
He can live among other nations and States only as long as he succeeds in persuading them that the Jews are not a distinct people but the representatives of a religious faith who thus constitute a âreligious communityâ, though this be of a peculiar character⦠. He is obliged to conceal his own particular character and mode of life that he may be allowed to continue his existence as a parasite among the nations. The greater the intelligence of the individual Jew, the better will he succeed in deceiving others. His success in this line may even go so far that the people who grant him hospitality may be led to believe that the Jew among them is a genuine Frenchman, for instance, or Englishman or German or Italian, who just happens to belong to a religious denomination which is different from that prevailing in these countries.40
Jews are the umbrella enemy in Hitlerâs Security story, because they lead all those outside the true German tribe: the intellectual secular urban classes, the socialist workers and immigrants. Jews have infused all these groups with anti-nationalistic values. They lack the ruthless toughness, the militarism, the rootedness in the land, the religious fervor, the authoritarian passion and the Aryan pride and nationalism that unite the German house. And they are responsible for the economic crisis and the cultural erosion that is undermining the Aryan downstairs and destroying the pride of the true German tribe, both upstairs and downstairs.
The Jews are leaders, argues Hitler, of the socialist parties and the trade unions, a second domestic enemy, who threaten the nation by dividing upstairs elites from downstairs workers. Hitler expresses sympathy with workers but makes clear that he sees their organized protests as a deep threat to the nation:
I was able to understand their [fellow workers] position fully. They were dissatisfied with their lot and cursed the fate which had hit them so hard. They hated their employers, whom they looked upon as the heartless administrators of their cruel destiny. Often they used abusive language against the public officials, whom they accused of having no sympathy with the situation of the working people. They made public protests against the cost of living and paraded through the streets in defence of their claims. At least all this could be explained on reasonable grounds. But what was impossible to understand was the boundless hatred they expressed against their own fellow citizens, how they disparaged their own nation, mocked at its greatness, reviled its history and dragged the names of its most illustrious men in the gutter.
This hostility towards their own kith and kin, their own native land and home was as irrational as it was incomprehensible. It was against Nature.41
