Diagnosis and Treatment

Phenomenology plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of dystonia. As described earlier, acute presentations of dystonia are uncommon, generally seen following exposure to dopamine receptor blocking agents and in the rare genetic condition rapid-onset dystonia parkinsonism (DYT12). In the vast majority of patients, the history of dystonia is slow, evolving over many months. A genetic etiology is much more common in children.
