THE SPECIALTY’S FINANCIAL REWARDS

The effect of these technological advances on the financial fortunes of cardiologists was profound. During the period between 1973 and 1979, as the pace of development of new clinical tools began to accelerate, median incomes of cardiologists grew faster than those of any other medical specialty.167 The increase was 55 percent in those six years, whereas for the profession overall it was about half that, at 28 percent. Cardiologists today are among the top earning specialists, with an average income in 2011 of over $300,000.168 Some segments of the field earned much more. Invasive cardiologists averaged over $472,000 and cardiovascular-pediatric surgeons over $725,000.169

As America’s population ages over the coming decades, cardiac care is likely to grow even more prominent. And, if present trends in the prevalence of obesity continue to hold, cardiology’s role stands to be reinforced even further, since the condition leads to a surfeit of heart disease. The field has contributed powerfully to increases in life expectancy over the past several decades, and it promises to bring even more advances in America’s health going forward. At the same time, it has rewarded its practitioners generously. None of this would have been possible without the foundational support provided in various forms by the government.
