MANIZALES

The capital of the Caldas department, pleasant and easygoing Manizales (pop. 393,200) is the region’s mountain city. Instead of developing in a lowland valley like Armenia or Pereira, Manizales is set atop meandering mountain ridges. This location means that getting around town involves huffing and puffing up and down hills on foot, enduring roller coaster-like bus or taxi rides along curvy roads, or taking the scenic route on the city’s expanding Cable Aéreo gondola network.

Perched above lush coffee farms below, at an altitude of 2,160 meters (7,085 feet), spectacular views abound in Manizales—but only when the sky is despejado (clear). On those days, you might see the peaks of the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados in the distance. It’s easy to visit that park—as well as other natural sights—with Manizales as one’s base.
