Chapter 10
“I'm going to move out,” Lucas announced as he shuffled to the kitchen table. Mavis was riding on his shoulder, her little pink wrapped tail sticking straight out.
“Oh? Why?” Tobin asked nonchalantly as he was pouring the older man his first cup of coffee. Lucas would drink several cups during the day, but still take an afternoon nap as if the strong coffee didn't bother him.
“I'm too much trouble here,” Lucas gruffly replied.
Molly stood by the stove frying bacon, but turned to meet Tobin's eyes in a silent question of what was going on?
Tobin was sure last night's accident with the kitten and the boys being upset were the reasons for Lucas' announcement.
“Where would you move to, Lucas?” Molly asked.
“Suppose Kansas City to be near my daughter.”
“Wouldn't you live with her, instead of near her?” Tobin asked. Something had been fishy about the situation between the father and the daughter. Lucas said his daughter was going to come home to sort her parent's things and move him to Kansas City, but Tobin had seen a letter, which Lucas had left lying around, which painted a different scenario.
“Uh, no. She doesn't have room.”
“Why not?” Tobin pushed Lucas for the real answer.
Lucas took several sips of coffee before confiding. “My daughter lives in a small house with her husband, four kids, and her mother-in-law. She doesn't have room for me too.”
Ah. The truth finally comes out. Tobin had invited Lucas to stay in the house with him until he moved to Kansas City, but now Tobin knew for sure the reason both father and daughter were delaying the move.
He'd guessed as much and had talked to Mack about building an addition to the back of the house for Lucas to have some privacy. He hadn't mentioned it to Lucas yet since Mack and Squires had been working on the exterior of the house first. And then the fence for the puppies and kids to play outside. And next on the list was a small barn and corral he'd promised to Molly...
Maybe he better discuss with Molly if Lucas could live permanently with them since the housing situation involved her too.
Tobin moved close to Molly, reaching for the bread, cutting board, and knife to slice bread for breakfast. He looked over his shoulder as the boys stared at Lucas as he talked about the kitten's rough night.
“What's your opinion on Lucas possibly staying with us?” Tobin said in a low tone.
“For a while or permanently?” Molly questioned Tobin.
“Uh, either?”
Molly turned for a moment to study Lucas patiently trying to communicate with the boys, and then turned back to Tobin.
“I was thinking of building on a separate room on the back of the house for him anyway,” Tobin added.
“Can you afford that?”
“Yes,” Tobin replied. He really needed to have a conversation about finances with his wife.
“I don't mind him living with us, but stairs are getting hard for him. A downstairs bedroom would be best for him.”
“So, it's okay for him to stay?” Tobin wanted to be sure.
