BE GRATEFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL

I am going to say something that flies in the face of accepted wisdom. Dozens, hundreds, thousands of gurus tell you the opposite of what I am about to share with you. There are courses that enjoin you to believe something that is flat-out wrong, and yet this falsehood is lauded as the way out of the problems that beset you.

Your indoctrination begins at a very young age—before grade school, even in prekindergarten. In early years, it does little damage and can even be beneficial. In later years, it becomes toxic and corrosive.

I have a confession to make. This falsehood is so firmly entrenched in our culture that I have sometimes used it myself to get a point across or to accomplish some end.

The big lie is this: You are told right from childhood that you are special. That you are unique. That you are significant. That you matter.

When you are very young, you don’t quite understand what this means. All you know is that the adults who mouth this look at you lovingly and cuddle you and give you treats.

This is good. It feels good and helps you grow.

However, as you grow older, the toxic side effects of this indulgence appear.

You see that you are not particularly special. But you like the feeling of being special. So you try to recreate it by trying to become significant in some restricted playing field.

Do you like tennis? You know you will not win a Grand Slam tournament, but perhaps you can win the club championship. Or be the top player in your league at the club.

We are always striving. To accomplish something. To become something. To acquire something.

I frequently ask those who take my programs to become the best version of themselves they are capable of being. And I will continue to do this. It has value for many and fits into the cultural conditioning we have all been subject to.

But, on a different plane, this striving is pointless.
