‘Jack Melvin! It sounds so similar to Jax Melville. It has to be him!’

‘You’re right, Lottie, it must be! And look at the address: 79 Morello Road.’

‘Your old house.’

‘He lived there before Mum moved there.’

‘He hid the metal thing under the floorboard.’

‘He forgot it when they left.’

‘And he came back to find it,’ I said. ‘And to get rid of us, of course.’

‘I wonder why they were here before?’ Mo said.

‘Maybe they were after somebody else. I almost feel sorry for Jax – can you imagine having to go through the same year at school over and over again? How incredibly boring.’

‘You know, I don’t think I’d mind that. You’d know what you were doing and things wouldn’t keep changing,’ Mo said. ‘It would be quite nice.’

‘You’re so weird. If Jax has been to school a hundred times before, you’d think he’d be more helpful with our Discovery project. He must have seen loads of good science experiments.’

‘He’s only interested in finding what he’s lost.’

‘So selfish,’ I sighed.

‘It must be really important to him. Remember how we felt when Schrodinger went missing? We couldn’t think about anything except getting him back.’

‘That was different. Schrodinger is part of our family – losing him would be the worst.’

‘That’s what we could do for the Discovery competition!’ Mo said. ‘We could invent something to stop people from losing their pets. What about a tiny device you can attach to your cat that allows you to track where it is on your phone, or laptop?’

‘That is actually a brilliant idea.’

‘So, shall we work on it together?’

‘I’d really like that. We’d better keep it a secret from Jax, though.’

‘I hate keeping secrets,’ Mo sighed. ‘It feels like lying.’

‘Don’t wimp out on me now, Mo. He’s supposed to be coming over, remember? We have to be fake nice to him, at least for the rest of today.’
