FROM MOM

I think it’s a tremendously exciting time. I’m biracial (black/white) and spent so many years answering the question “What are you?” and feeling the need to explain myself. It was thrilling for me when the term “multiracial” began to appear on forms—finally, no need to check “other” or just to “pick one.” How could I do that when I truly felt that I was somehow different from either of my parents’ identities? I feel lucky to be part of a group of people that is taking pride in self-definition. What does it mean for my boy? My hope for him is that this means that he will be free to choose for himself how he wants to identify, free of the insecurities of others. I believe that the reason that I was always asked “What are you?” is because my indefinability somehow made others feel uncomfortable. I was fine—felt myself to be the norm, in fact, until other people came along! I hope that Khaled will truly know that feeling: to be the “norm” with the freedom to explore his own racial, ethnic, and religious identity at the pace and in the ways that he, not society, chooses.
