Chapter Five.
Tap tap tap.
Letty awoke, groggy and disoriented. She glanced about through heavy-lidded eyes, unsure of what had awoken her. The flames burned low in the fireplace grate, but nothing else moved in the room. Letty pulled the covers higher up on her shoulder and settled back down to go to sleep.
Tap tap tap.
She sat up in bed with a start, this time fully awake. The tapping had come from her window.
Puzzled, intrigued, and more than a little frightened, she tiptoed over to the window, holding her breath. Then before her quailing nerves could fail her, she flung back the curtain, only to find James’ smiling face staring at her through the window.
With a cry she pushed up the sash and James tumbled into the bedroom.
“Shh,” hissed Letty. “James, what are you doing here?”
James scrambled to right himself, standing before Letty with an expression of half-guilt, half-defiance.
“James?” Letty said again. “What have you done?”
“Stolen away from my crew so that we may be married.”
Letty stared at him for a solid half minute. He shuffled his feet a little and laughed self-consciously, ducking his head to run a hand about the back of his neck.
“Well, that was not quite the response I expected.”
“Of all the scatterbrained, half-witted… truly romantic things you have ever done, James Matthew Stirling, this certainly takes the cake.”
James’ face, which had fallen at the start of her words, broke into a smile and he lunged at Letty, picking her up in a whirling embrace.
“You are quite mad, that’s what it is,” she said, hands on his shoulders and looking down at him lovingly.
“That I am, miss, mad in love with you.” He returned Letty to her feet and, grasping her face in his hands, planted a long, sweet kiss on her willing lips.
Letty sighed, comfortable in his arms, but aware of a dreadful nagging in her brain.
“I cannot wait for the day I never have to let you go at all, Letty,” James said from somewhere close to her ear and the implications of the words brought a sharp burst of color to Letty’s cheeks and an impish smile to her face. She took a step back and looked at him from under her lashes.
“So,” James said eagerly. “Pack up your things. I can help you. Our journey to Gretna Green begins tonight.”
“Tonight?” Startled, Letty allowed her grip on James’ shoulders to falter. “I cannot go tonight.”
“Why ever not?”
“Well, there is my family for one thing. Clara would never forgive me for getting married without her in attendance.”
“I think Clara will understand, given the circumstances,” replied James wryly.
“And my clothes. I cannot just pack up my entire wardrobe in ten minutes.”
“You do not need your entire wardrobe, Letty. Just enough for a few days to get us to Gretna and back.”
Letty could hear the stress in James’ voice, and she sat down on the chair by her little dressing table.
“Oh, James, I just do not know.”
“Letty,” said James, and she looked up at him as he took her hand.
