Chapter Thirteen
I heard her gasp. The sobbing stopped instantly.
“Yes. Who is it?” The words were choppy. Angry.
Maybe I’d made a mistake. I hesitated, wondering if I should slink silently into the shadowy hallway and up to my room. But no. I was trying to be led by God in this, and I felt strongly that I was supposed to talk to her.
Taking a deep breath, I planted my feet. “It’s Victoria. May I come in?”
Footsteps crossed the floor, and the door opened a crack. Miss Simone’s face looked ravaged as she squinted at me, making no move to ask me in.
“Please, Miss Simone. I need to talk to you.”
A look of resignation crossed her face. Slowly, she opened the door and stepped back, motioning me to enter.
Miss Simone’s room was as neat as a pin. I’d just given it a good cleaning on Friday. Most of the seniors preferred to make their own beds each morning. But Mabel or I took care of Miss Simone’s.
“What do you want to speak to me about, Victoria?” She didn’t offer me a chair, so I figured I’d better get to the point.
“I heard you crying as I passed your door. I wanted to make sure you were all right.”
“As you can see, I’m fine. Now, is there anything else?”
I was tempted to say no and make my escape, but I pulled some courage out of somewhere.
“Miss Simone, I believe someone is harassing you in some way. The phone calls, your tears. . .and today, I saw you on the square in an argument with someone.”
Fear glazed her eyes, and she started breathing heavily. “Who? Who did you see me arguing with?”
“I didn’t see who it was. Why don’t you tell me? I want to help you, if you’ll let me.”
Relief washed over her face, and she attempted a laugh.
“You must have seen me speaking to the little boy who almost ran me over. He was skateboarding on the sidewalk.”
Could it be true? If so, I’d just made a fool of myself. But I wasn’t buying it.
“I didn’t hear a skateboard.”
“Are you calling me a liar?”
“Of course not. But I think you’re afraid of something, and for some reason, you’re also afraid to tell anyone.”
“Well, my dear, you have quite an imagination. I appreciate your concern, but I assure you there is nothing wrong.”
“Then why have you been crying?”
She swallowed, and panic appeared on her face. Quickly, she composed herself.
“A friend of mine passed away recently. We were close. I’m sorry if my tears caused you concern.” She opened the door and stood beside it, pointedly waiting for me to leave.
Which I did.
I didn’t believe her for a minute, but what could I do? Keep watching.
I knelt beside my bed. Lord, I’m trying to do only what I feel You’re telling me to do. If I’m mistaken about Miss Simone, please let me know.
