'So what exactly is your plan?' asked Becky.

'Well, basically,' I said, lowering my voice so the other people in the line wouldn't hear, 'I go in there, find Sereena, tell her I've come to wish her good luck for the concert, and then shake her hand.'

It was Saturday night, and we were in the vestibule at Southlands Stadium, surrounded by a sea of eager Sereena fans. In a few minutes, Sereena's concert – and my latest mission – would start. I was already feeling pretty nervous.

'That's the big plan you two have been working on all week? No offence, Pen, but I think even those kids could've come up with something better than that.' Becky gestured at the group of girls in front of us in the queue. They looked to be about twelve years old, and all of them were wearing matching pink 'Sereena Rocks!' T-shirts and giggling like lunatics.

The queue started to move. I stood on tiptoe and saw that ahead of us the door to the main theatre had been opened. I looked around, but there was no sign of Seb. I hoped he'd hurry up. It would be a lot harder to find him once we were inside.

'We were just trying to keep it simple,' I told Becky. 'I don't know what will be going on backstage, so it might not work out that way in any case.'

The line shuffled forward.

'I don't get why you have to wish her luck, though,' said Becky.

'Seb thinks I'll have more chance of resetting our signals if I do something to provoke a Mishap or a Prohap while I'm in contact with her. Saying something nice seemed better than telling her she's an evil cow.'

'That's way more like what she deserves, though,' said Becky.

I smiled.

'Yeah, but if all goes well, I'll get what I deserve straight afterwards, and I'd rather not bring myself any more Mishaps, if it's OK with you.'

'I guess that makes sense,' admitted Becky.

Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked round, and there was Seb, climbing under the red velvet rope that marked the edge of the queue.

'OK, I think I've worked it all out,' he said. Handing me a plastic card on a green lanyard, he pointed to a far corner of the vestibule. 'See the double doors over there? Go through them and you'll see another door with security guards at it. Show them your card. They'll let you through to the backstage area, where someone should be waiting to give you your tour.'

I looked down at the card he'd given me. There was a microchip in it, and it was printed with the words 'VIP Backstage Pass: Vice President, Official Sereena Fan Club'.

'How'd you get this?' I asked.

'I have connections.' The line was moving quickly now. Seb looked over the heads of the crowd, which wasn't hard, as a lot of them were female and younger than us. I'd never realised before how many of Sereena's fans seemed to be year seven girls.
