Not only was Jamie a true romantic at heart, he was an easy man to be married to. Mercy awoke in his warm embrace, feeling more cherished than any fairytale princess could have felt in the books. He was so gentle with her, so respectful, and so loving that she blushed at the memories of their first night together.
He quickly washed up and dressed, then muttered something about running out to grab a copy of the newspaper. After he left, it dawned on her he was giving her the privacy to which she was accustomed for her toilette. Good gracious, but he was a considerate man! He was attentive without being smothering. A man of few words who chose them wisely when he was ready to speak. A trusted friend and confidante, her defender and champion, her husband andâ¦
Mercy dropped her brush. It landed on the dresser with a clatter. âIâm in love with him!â She spoke to her own reflection in the mirror. Iâm in love with my husband. She couldnât pinpoint the exact moment it had happened, though she knew it was a recent development. Until a week ago, sheâd viewed him as little more than a dance partner. How was it possible heâd become so much more to her in such a short amount of time?
Perhaps sheâd been slowly growing in regard for him over a much longer period and had simply been unaware. Or perhapsâ¦her thoughts drifted to the pair of gingerbread cookies resting on her nightstand at Beckettâs. Perhaps, sheâd received her Christmas miracle after all â in July, no less!
Mercy finished tidying her hair and tucked two of the red roses in her tightly coiled braids. Whether by magic or miracles, the truth remained the same. She was in love with Jamie MacIntov, and couldnât wait to tell him.
She didnât have long to wait. A gentle knock sounded at the door soon after she finished donning the spare dress sheâd brought along in her travel bag. It was a simple, navy cotton ensemble, but sheâd fancied it up with an ivory crocheted collar and the wedding roses in her hair.
âItâs me, princess.â Jamie called softly.
She flew across the room to open the door for him and was delighted to find him bearing a tray of tea and biscuits. The scent of fresh-baked bread wafted into the room, making her realize how hungry she was.
âOh, you wonderful man!â She took the tray from him and hurried to set it on the table in the corner of the room. âI fear Iâm already spoiled beyond redemption by Claraâs marvelous cooking.â As much as she enjoyed being spoiled, however, she knew it would be wise to economize on dining expenses. That would entail purchasing their own groceries and her taking over their meal preparation, a task that might prove difficult in a boarding room with few resources. Nonetheless, she would make do, even if she had to do some of her cooking at Beckettâs.
Jamie tossed his hat on the bed sheâd made up in his absence and drew her into his arms.
