Chapter 6

Inside Triggers

This is where hypnosis will help you the most. Hypnosis can help you stay on your plan to manage all the external triggers, but the real value is identifying internal triggers and eliminating those triggers using hypnosis and the power of your subconscious mind. Internal conflicts consume a lot of energy and there is great value in subconscious resolution.

Pain is an important way your body communicates with you. And on some level, there is a deep knowledge that if there is pain, there must be something wrong. And if there is severe pain, as with migraine headache pain, then some part of us will naturally be fearful that there is something severely wrong. Please remember, as I mentioned in my introduction, I require that your doctor give permission before I will work with you to take away your pain. Once your doctor is satisfied that there is nothing more seriously wrong, and nothing more he or she can do to help you eliminate migraine headache pain, then I can safely and ethically work with you to help you manage and hopefully eliminate your headache pain.

You may be paralyzed by the fear of pain—I know I was, at times. I found myself feeling hopeless. Fear of pain influences your physical experience of pain. Your history of pain influences your current experience with pain. Mistaken beliefs about pain influence the current experience. You have laid down a neural pathway where thoughts and feelings lead to migraine pain. You’ve done this for so long, the pathway has become a rut in your brain. Ruts are hard to get out of. And the process of following those pathways over and over again has become so automatic that you don’t even realize you are doing it.

I’ll encourage you to remember that pain is temporary in most cases. I know how hard this is to believe in the midst of a headache, but it is. It’s temporary. And although some pain may be inevitable, the suffering is optional. And I’ll help you learn how to use the role of your attention in managing your discomfort. Managing your state and managing your soundtrack is key. And I will give you some specific tools to help you set yourself up for the success of less pain.

Changing your perceptions, which are the conclusions you reached based on what you saw, felt, or experienced, changes your beliefs. And beliefs are just thoughts you think over and over again.

Mistaken perceptions can color your entire life, making things harder than they need to be. I want to share an example of this from my own experience when I first learned 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®. We were all laying on the floor of the classroom, with the lights off. We were going back, under hypnosis, to a very early time when we felt loved. Going back to that time and feeling, reaching for the felt memory of actually being there. I immediately found myself on my fourth birthday receiving a gift from my paternal grandmother, Meggie.
