Re-Building My Life
It started to become clear to me that in general, people are kind and selfless. This dawned on me while I was recovering. People often go through incredible duress for the sake of others, even strangers, like the countless volunteers and rescuers that participated in the events in SúðavÃk and Flateyri. Through all these revelations, and through witnessing from a distance the pain of others, I started to get a better and healthier understanding of life and of myself.
This began a period of re-building my life and myself again. I took it slowly, trying to find out which doors would open up instead of which had closed. For two years I continued selling vacuum cleaners in Iceland. I didnât see it as a future project and it was only intended to keep me alive. In this game of life, I experienced a long stalemate, a difficult status quo. I was semiâtrapped and I couldnât find a simple way out of the all too familiar business of selling vacuum cleaners. I was good at it, but the passion was long gone.
So, what did it take to break this stalemate? Actually, it was silly pride on my behalf that did the trick. A key manager from the mother company was visiting Iceland and the head of the Icelandic division was taking her out to dinner. I saw myself as a key player in the companyâs success, so when he didnât invite me to the dinner, I had enough. And when I found out that other salesmen, whom I had taught and trained, were invited instead, I became deeply offended. I thought to myself: âNow is the time to close this chapter and to leave once and for all.â I felt a strong urge to extend my knowledge to more people than the ones that were selling vacuum cleaners.
That same night I packed everything I had that belonged to the company and left all documents at the office. I had no idea where I would go next; it was a huge leap of faith. And in retrospect it was exactly the right move in the current situation, putting an end to that complicated chapter of my life.
Something new was about to be born.
