The above is a reflection of the wider experiences that lead women into contact with the CJS in the first place. One in four women in prison had spent part of their childhood in care; nearly 40% had effectively left school before they were 16. Corston catalogues the extent and deeply engrained nature of the problems that women in prison face. As with all figures in this area, it is important to note that the risk factors are much more common in offender rather than in general populations. Even allowing for that, the levels of mental distress are, to my mind, both astonishing and deeply troubling. The following gives a brief snapshot:

37% had attempted suicide at some time in their life.

51% have severe and enduring mental illness.

47% a major depressive disorder.

6% psychosis.

3% schizophrenia.

50% + suffered domestic violence.

One in three women in prison have been subjected to sexual violence.

(Corston Inquiry, 2007)
