Chapter 17
From the examination table in the sterile corner of the locker room, Kamal watched his team celebrate a 3:2 victory. Pain shot through his swollen knee as the medics pushed, pulled, and tapped on it trying to figure how extensive the damage was. His heart beat at a rapid pace dreading what their conclusion would be.
As he came down from his adrenaline high, a lone tear rolled from his closed eyes. The implication of what this injury might mean settled in. The pain medication was working on the ache in his knee, but his heart was another story. God wouldnât allow this to happen to him, would He? Heâd turned over a new leaf since that day at church. Doing what he was supposed to do â praying, reading the Bible. Something he found challenging until Ebele agreed to do it with him every night. Kamal shook his head to rid it of his negative thoughts. He was now saved. God wouldnât cut short his dreams just like that.
âDanjuma,â the lead medical professional spoke.
âWhatâs up?â His monotone answer mirrored his mood.
âI have it wrapped up in a compression bandage, and this ice pack should help you out tonight.â He walked to the other side of the room and came back with some Naprosyn tablets. âHere, take these tonight for the pain. Looks like you have a torn ligament, but you need an MRI for us to know the extent of the damage.â
The man helped Kamal sit up and elevated his injured right knee. Kamal stared at the swelling and sighed, hopeful that the next day, the doctor would bring better news.
âOkay, thanksââ
âKammy, how you feeling, bro?â Tega walked into the room followed by Freddie and Princeton. The teamâs coach wasnât too far behind them.
Kamal gave them a rundown of what the medic just told him. The coach pulled the medic to the side, and they began to talk, looking over at him at intervals. Kamal wondered if there was something the medic was telling the coach but didnât tell him.
âYou ready to head out?â Tega asked.
âYeah.â
Freddie and Princeton helped stabilize him on the crutches theyâd given him. Kamal hobbled on one leg until they made it to the team bus. Soon, everyone was on the bus for the short ride from London stadium to the Turk West facility. There, the players would get into their cars and head to their various homes. The plan was for Kamal to leave his car there and ride to Essex with Tega.
âAye, you see my sports bag? I need my phone,â Kamal asked, once they got off the bus. Still balanced on his crutches, he put his weight on his left side.
âYeah, here you go.â Tega handed him the bag.
Kamal retrieved his phone from the side pocket and slung the bag over his shoulder. The second he turned it on, his phone lit up with notifications from social media and texts. He leaned against Tegaâs car and went directly to his messages. He needed to get to Ebele.
