The worst part wasn’t dealing with her family. It was suffering alone, because Rebecca was the last person invited to any event featuring a majority of the Wongs.

Luckily, she had never been to Hong Kong before, so she was content to have dinner in the hotel restaurant that boasted the best views of the nighttime skyline. She would have to dine alone, but she was prepared to take a million photos on her phone while Facetiming Caitlyn back in America. Jane had already checked in with her partner. “Rebecca’s having a grand time, and I’m here wishing my mother would just stop taking the piss.”

Jane arranged for a personal shopper to meet with Rebecca and take her on a small spree – Jane’s gift – as soon as she finished her early dinner. Jane had to deal with her family for most of the evening, and that included listening to her sister Lilian bemoan her infant son’s colic and her sister-in-law constantly “commend” her for having a son at all. Every time they brought up children, they looked at Jane with deep, satisfied pity.

If anyone asked Jane why she drank more than she probably should, she only had to point to the Wong dinner table. When they weren’t slyly complaining about the consistency of the lobster or scratching their skin beneath their bespoke suits, they were vying for the more impressive vacation or recent accomplishment. Most of these accomplishments featured their young children. Willow had taught everyone how to play 4fuckingD chess with their children. Jane could still remember the day Willow approached one of her oldest friends and said, “You remember my Lin Hua, yes? She just earned her first billion dollars at her new company. Yes, you heard me. Billion. How is your little son, the one teaching English in Cambodia? Oh, that’s too bad. I hear malaria is terrible for your complexion.”

“Jane brought with her a new companion,” Willow said in a hush to Lilian, who sat on her right-hand side as befitting her oldest daughter. Her oldest child, Jane’s brother, was at the opposite end of the table in their father’s absence. Jane would take her mother’s left-hand side and think about the word “sinister” for their entire meal. “She’s the loveliest creature you’ve ever seen. Adorable little freckles and the kind of hair Patty Cheung’s girl tried to accomplish when she came back from the UK.”

Ouch. Jane was pretty sure that was a backhanded compliment, since Lissa Cheung looked as daft as a mad cow with her bright red perm and stenciled freckles.

“Is that so?” Lilian gave her sister her undivided attention, a rare treat. “What’s her name? Whatever happened to Caitlyn? She was a doll.”

“Caitlyn is manning the fort back in New England,” Jane said. “And her name is Rebecca. Rebecca Pruitt.”

“What a charming American name! I’m assuming she’s American. You really love Americans, Jane.”

“Yes, she’s American,” Jane said to her sister. “You would probably like her.” Rebecca was the right amount of country-American
