He Says…
It's hard for us to give up control, especially when it comes to fixing things around the house.
“When I know how to get something done fast and cheap, the last thing I want to do is hire someone else to do the job, especially in my own house. This usually creates problems with my girlfriend because she can't understand why I won't spend that free time with her instead. If I could offer any advice, it would be to try to understand that this is what we do for a living, and if we can apply it to our own homes, we want to be able to do that. It has nothing to do with whether or not we want to spend time with you. And it doesn't mean we are avoiding you, either. For the most part, construction guys are pretty assertive people. If the guy you are with isn't happy, he'll most likely tell it to you straight.”— Frank
We need a girl that's low-maintenance.
“The last thing I want is to come home from a long day of work and feel like I have to entertain my girlfriend. Sometimes it's great having someone to come home to and lay on the couch with, but other times I feel like I can't handle all the obligations. I think we need a certain kind of girl; a girl that gets what we do and can understand why we do it.”— Steve
She Says…
Don't be so quick to judge this guy.
“Although he won't make as much money as a banker, these guys have a huge amount of talent and self-worth. Their jobs take a lot of skill and precision and some of them go on to become landscapers or set designers, so be careful not to underestimate the work they do, or their potential for success. Plus, they take pride in what they do and they are generally very diligent and responsible. I went out with a crane operator for two years and he had every good quality that I look for in a man.”— Alyson
They are crappy communicators.
“These guys are not great with the phone, so don't be surprised if you leave him a message and he never calls back. Though he always carries his cell phone on the job, chances are he won't pick it up, especially if he doesn't recognize the number. Oh, and don't be surprised if his outgoing message is something like, ‘yo,’ and then you hear the beep. These guys don't need to be concerned about sounding ‘professional.’ Don't get discouraged if your guy seems impossible to get in touch with. Half these guys walk around with their mailboxes full and they never empty them. I used to have to text my boyfriend ten times before I could get him to call back!”— Alyssa
