MARKETING

Something that has come up in my own library quite a bit is the idea of marketing our services to faculty and the campus at large. This is no small effort and entails a lot of forethought and energy. But is marketing the right way to get our point across and communicate our worth? Isn’t it enough just to do our work? I countered a colleague’s battle cry for more marketing strategies and efforts on the part of librarians in the only way that made sense to me: to compare what we do with other faculty or anyone else on campus for that matter. Do faculty have to advertise the fact that they teach? Of course not; the very idea is preposterous. We know that they teach. They do not need to make cute posters of themselves or otherwise bang the drum about what it is that they do. One could counter that argument by saying that they don’t do that because people understand what they do, unlike librarians. I fear that “clever” marketing strategies only further reinforce the idea that we are service oriented rather than collaborative with faculty and engaged in teaching.
