Passing by her chamber window, Eirene looked down to see Fletcher sitting in the garden gazing intently at her window. She turned off the lamp. Standing beside the curtain in the dark, she was free to watch him watching her.
Her lips went warm and tingly all over again. She licked them, but his distinct masculine flavour had faded.
It was a silly thing to do, stand here and stare, but she was alone. No one would ever know of it. Nor would they know how calf-eyed she was in the moment over him.
Calf-eyed and nipped by Cupidâs arrow. She leaned against the window frame, sighing.
No one truly believed in Cupid and his pointed little arrow.
Some people, she thought, narrowing her eyes at the man sitting on the iron bench, did not believe in dreams, either.
Not yet, he didnât. He was probably confused as to why he had kissed her the way he had. It was understandable. She had been confused, too, at first. Oh, yes, delightfully fuzzy for a while, grinning and flushed all over. It had taken a few hours to gather herself.
Concentrating on common things such as discussions about the party menu with Mother and Cook, having tea, and reading, it took all those things to make her feel like herself again. Eirene Elspeth Smythe, grounded in reality and trusting in dreams.
She blew a kiss down to Fletcher in the dark. She did not expect him to see it.
It was only one more thing he could not see.
What he probably saw was his bright shiny new ship cutting across the Atlantic.
Nothing could be more at odds with her dream.
His ship? His land? What would he choose?
For as much as she would like to think nothing could stand against the power of her dream, she did wonder.
He was a strong-minded man.
She spun away from the window. Flopped backwards across her bed.
The memory of his kiss made her go flip-floppy.
It left her questioning things she had long held true.
Why, oh, why did she have to be wondering if love assigned in a dream was love at all? It was not as if Fletcher had walked her dream with her. He had not shared the loving feeling it gave her.
Dreams were complicated wee things. In the moment she was confounded by them.
Did the special dreams make things happen or simply show her in advance what was to be?
She did not know. What she did know was that tomorrow she would begin teaching Fletcher proper etiquette when meeting a lady.
Not that she wanted him to meet a woman who would become infatuated with him. No indeed, all she wanted was for him to make a proper impression.
Truly, though, it was but part of the reason for the lesson.
The bigger part was that she wanted to spend time with him. Even if she had never dreamed of him she would want to be with him.
Fletcher Larkin was unlike any man she had ever met. He was a bold man with a tender kiss.
