The year in Costa Rica was a wonderful respite from the high-octane pace of New York City. Naava and Noah picked up an impressive amount of Spanish. They learned how to ride bicycles over cobblestones and through potholes. They learned the best technique for lobbing a limón dulce at one’s sibling. They learned the pleasures of playing in the drenching afternoon rains, soaking themselves through and through, knowing that a late-day sun would eventually pop out. They learned that fresh coconuts chopped open by machete offered a free sweet drink. They learned that school was much more fun when rabbits, chickens, squirrels, and a lumbering sow resided in the backyard. They grew accustomed to social gatherings at which twelve different languages were spoken. Ariel spent her first six months being passed happily from hand to hand, cooed over, rocked, and sung to. There was only one lullaby in Costa Rica, it seemed, perhaps just one in all of Latin America—“Los Pollitos.” To this day, it remains Ariel’s favorite song.
