The case of the poppy-wearing conscientious objector

A staff member, Anne, described what had happened:

It was close to Remembrance Sunday—the day in November that commemorates the contribution of British and Commonwealth servicemen and -women in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts. A war veteran had visited the care home selling poppies, the flower traditionally worn to mark the occasion (Figure 6). Poppies were given to each resident. The staff decided to organize an activity for the residents in the main lounge on Sunday morning including watching the Remembrance Sunday service on TV. The staff knew that three of the residents had fought in the war, and thought that this event would be appreciated by all.

6. Remembrance poppy.
