— CHAPTER 16 —
THE OFFICE
Friday, May 17, 1963
My new alarm clock went off. I got up, got dressed and headed for the Magazine Street bus, hoping Lee would be on it. He wasn’t. Disappointed that I had to ride to work alone, I thought about how important Lee had become to me in such a short time. But working at Reily’s and the arrival of Marina made it more difficult to spend time with him. I arrived, clocked in, and walked over to Standard Coffee’s office, hoping to find Lee there, but he wasn’t. About 9:15, Lee arrived. When we saw each other, it was like magic: we couldn’t stay in the office pretending neutrality, so we retreated to a private area where we held each other tight.
“I’ve missed you so much!” I managed to say.
“Hush, Juduffki!” he answered, kissing me again and again. I rested my head against his chest, listening to his heart race. Finally, I said, “I hope you’ve kept your promise about Marina, because I can’t go on, if you... ”
“I’m keeping my promise!” he answered. “I’m not going to break it. She’s okay.”
“I have begun to dream about you,” I said.
“I know. We meet each other in our dreams.”
His statement startled me, because my dreams of Lee last night had been so vivid I felt it was a real meeting of our spirits. Could it be that somehow our subconscious minds had really reached out to each other? Lee slipped a tiny, crystalline plastic heart into my hand. “I made this for you on a lathe they have in the machine shop,” he said. “When you look at it, remember, you can see right through it. My love for you, I want it to be transparent, hiding nothing.”
I saw that Lee’s thumb had a bandage and mentioned it.
“Oh, I over-polished my thumb a bit when I was polishing your heart,” Lee said with charm. He got another kiss. Then I told him we could enjoy an extra long lunch break together every Friday, because on Mondays and Tuesdays weekend order problems and emergencies always piled up, leaving no time for lunch. This meant we could have that long lunch today! Then I reminded Lee that Robert was returning Sunday, and would stay until Tuesday morning.
“If he asks what I’m doing, I will tell him everything,” I warned Lee. “Even about us. If things in our marriage don’t improve, I’ll divorce him.”
“On the other hand,” Lee said, “as long as you are a newlywed, it would seem improbable that you and I might be having an affair. Have you thought about that?”
“We’re not sleeping together, Lee,” I said soberly. “We’re not cheating on them.”
“Yes, we are,” Lee said. “Just as it says in the Bible, we’re committing adultery in our hearts. The only difference is that we haven’t committed it in bed ... yet.”
“But I can’t lie to him.”
“You don’t have to lie,” Lee said. “You already said, ‘if he asks’... If he doesn’t ask, he doesn’t deserve to know.
