Blood tests

A sample of your blood may be taken for analysis. Your doctor may want an analysis of your blood cholesterol levels.

Too much low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol or too little high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good”) cholesterol puts you at greater risk of atherosclerosis, an accumulation of fatty deposits in your blood vessels.

Other tests may include measurement of your blood sugar (glucose) for indications of diabetes, and of thyroid hormone — abnormal levels of these substances can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Elevated levels of certain enzymes in the bloodstream that are released from injured or dying heart muscle tissues, such as creatine kinase and troponin, also may indicate heart damage during a heart attack.
