1Additive and integrative development has been referred to as horizontal and vertical development and hierarchical complexity (Commons & Richards, 2002; Commons, Trudeau, Stein, Richards, & Krause, 1998; Cook-Greuter, 2004). I have found in practice that the terms additive and integrative is more easily understood by those who are unfamiliar with developmental psychology. The term integrative development also suggests the idea of complexity without adding a bias of “better” that the terms vertical and hierarchical connote.
