Figure 7.2: Character-Driven Red Herrings
The questions listed below are designed to help you think through the process of incorporating red herrings in your stories. As you go through the exercise, take notes about how these tactics can help you build suspense.
Do any characters enjoy the halo effect? If so, describe the positive attribute(s) your readers admire.
Do any characters suffer from the devil effect? If so, describe the negative attribute(s) your readers dislike.
Should a character use a flaw in logic, such as the bandwagon fallacy, to divert readers’ attention from a significant issue?
Is there a detail you can hide in plain sight? What is it? Where will you place it?
Do any of your characters have special expertise that lets them know things other characters don’t? If so, who and what do they know? Be as specific as possible. (Don’t simply say a lawyer knows the law; specify he knows the rule against perpetuities.)
Can you incorporate any of these tactics into your plot by beefing up a TRD? How?
