Chapter 9

12 pm

The whipping wind outside the hotel sent a chill slamming down Edward’s spine. He was still chilled through, and wondered briefly whether he’d ever feel warm again. The whole idea had been beyond stupid, but he couldn’t stop smiling all the same. Elation and adrenaline had left him high as a kite, and even standing there waiting for Max to show up couldn’t dampen his enthusiasm. He’d snagged the book. The deed was done with no suspicion on the part of anyone in the hotel that he’d played any part in the heist of the century.

On the far end of the parking lot emergency vehicles circled what used to be their rental car. Heavy smoke still put a smudge into the otherwise perfect blue sky. Eventually someone would think to ask whose car that was, and records would trace it back to the airport. But his name was nowhere on the documents. Sure, he’d have to ditch the fake ID he’d used, but he had others, and never cared much for that particular name anyway.

Overall, a job well done.

The only problem was Max. Where the hell was he?

Hoping that he hadn’t gone and gotten himself dragged off to the police station, Edward scanned the parking lot again, wishing they’d thought to set up a meeting point. Especially since that wind wasn’t letting up one bit and standing still was doing nothing toward warming him up again. Bouncing in place a little, hands thrust deep into the pockets of his coat he made a full 360 and finally spotted what looked like a tendril of smoke snaking around the corner of the building.

Once again his instincts hadn’t let him down.

“Took you long enough,” Max said through an exhale full of smoke, “I’m freezing my ass off out here.”

“You? I was literally freezing my ass off up there, as well as many other important parts of my anatomy.”

Max smirked. “Has it turned black and fallen off yet?”

Edward couldn’t help but laugh. Max could be such a cynical prick sometimes.

“Besides,” Max continued, “it was your dumbass idea. You got the book?”

Edward nodded and patted his pocket.

“Great, let’s get the hell out of here.”

“How? I seem to recall someone torching the rental. A little extreme, don’t you think? Do you know how much that’s gonna cost me?”

“Relax, you paid for the insurance. It’ll be fine. Besides, the name it’s under doesn’t exist, does it?” He dug in his pocket and pulled out both their phones; Edward had left his with Max in case he was forced to leave his clothes behind. It was always good to stay one step ahead. “I’ll call us a cab.” After making the arrangements, he turned back to Edward. “So, how’d it go?”

“Remind me to tell you the story of this one, it’s a pretty good tale.” Edward looked around before handing the book over to Max, who tucked it into his pocket and stamped out his cigarette beneath the toe of his shoe.

“I still can’t believe that hair-brained scheme of yours worked.
