Her position on the roots of the culture and how it is depicted is aligned very much to her father’s. She noted that when he returned to the masking tradition in the late 1980s after taking twenty years off to raise his family, the first suit he made as the Big Chief of the Guardians of the Flame had “an Oba for Benin on it”: “My father definitely believed that this was African cultural expression refashioned for where we are geographically and cloaked, and that is the mask. The cloaking of the African ways of being and expression.”
