Chapter 6

Restored Vision

A woman in premarital counseling was asked, “What attracted you to your future husband?” Most men would hope the answer to that question would be that he was sexy and just too fine to overlook. But this particular woman answered with something less exciting. She stated that the main thing that attracted her to him was his walk with God. It may come as a shock, men, but having a passion for the Lord and being willing to walk with Him and your wife through everything that is thrown at you creates credibility. This credibility leads to a sexy kind of trust. Your wife knows and trusts you to lead her, for no matter where you lead her, she knows you’ll be seeking the face of the Lord.

Walking with God

Leading a family starts with being in a vital and flourishing relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Jesus’ own leadership flowed from His intimacy with the Father. But as men we find intimacy whether with God or others to be a challenge because of our task-oriented natures. Because of our tendencies, we must bring great focus to our relationship with God. This is primarily accomplished through prayer.

I’m not talking about any kind of prayer. I’m not talking about the kind of prayer in public when a man begins to preach to people more than talk to God. Nor am I talking about vain and irrelevant repetition recited around the dinner table just for the sake of saying a blessing. I’m talking about following the example of Jesus in Godward, authentic, focused prayer.

Jesus’ Prayer Life

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As He finished, one of His disciples came to Him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples” (Luke 11:1 nlt). It wasn’t that they didn’t know how to communicate words toward heaven; it was the way in which Jesus did so that was unique. Although Jesus is fully man and fully God, nothing in His life other than His death expressed His humanity more than His prayer life. So what were the specific things that marked Jesus’ prayer life? What made it so unique and desirable for His first followers?

The sense that God is His Father (Luke 11:2)

A commitment to a particular place (Matt. 14:13; Mark 1:45; Luke 4:42; cf. John 11:54)

Deep sense of dependence (Luke 22:44)

Venting outlet (Luke 22:42)

Talk to God in the most difficult moments (Mark 15:34)
