Chapter 18 Underwear

“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?” Yuki leaned against my apartment door, cigarette dangling from her lips.

My heart raced. I should’ve prepared a story. I don’t know, maybe that I’d felt sick... but wait, no I didn’t need to. I’d made the deal and it was too late for anyone to do a thing about it.

While I unlocked my door, Yuki threw her cigarette butt on the walkway and ground it with her foot.

“I went to see Yamaguchi. We reached an agreement about my parents.”

I tried glaring at her to guilt her into picking it up. Instead, she barged into my apartment leaving me to do it.

“What did you offer him now?”

I had to stand around while she took her shoes off. The tiny genkan area inside the front door could only hold one person.

“Nothing actually. I agreed not to bail on working for him.”

“What?” Yuki looked up, balancing on one leg with her shoe dangling off her foot. “But you were doing that anyway? You’re lying.”

“I drive a hard bargain.” There might’ve been a touch of smugness in my grin.

Finally, Yuki moved inside. She gasped looking around. “Molly! What have you done?”

Sure, I hadn’t tidied up before I left but it wasn’t that bad. Anyway, it was my apartment, if I wanted to leave a few things— then I saw over her shoulder and squealed.

My stuff. My precious stuff. Scattered everywhere.

I knocked Yuki out of the way and ran to the futon, not even removing my right shoe. Hurling clothes in the air, I hunted for my laptop.

“Oof, careful where you’re throwing stuff.” Yuki peeled my skirt off her head.

“Where is it? My laptop’s gone!” I screeched, my voice frantic. I threw more stuff out of my way, my chest tightening.

My whole life existed on that laptop.

“This laptop?” Yuki pointed to the counter.

“I didn’t leave it there.” I rushed over, hugging it to me. If I lost my laptop, I’d be screwed. “Someone’s been in my apartment. They touched my laptop. Bastards.”

“The Koi. Definitely. Anyone else would’ve just stolen it but they could download all your data in seconds.” She clicked her fingers to demonstrate.

“Can’t be. Yamaguchi sent them to Ibaraki, wherever that is.”

“What?” Yuki threw her head back, shaking with laughter. “That’s the best.”

I quickly gathered up the dirty underwear from the floor. I didn’t know what was worse, that I had dirty underwear scattered around where Yuki could see it or that someone had been through my laundry basket.

They’d gone through my laundry basket! They’d touched my underwear.

The full implications of that slammed me in the stomach. They’d touched my knickers and — I had to stop thinking about it but I counted my underwear before I threw it back in the basket just to make sure they hadn’t stolen any.

All present and accounted for.

“I hope for your sake no one went through your laptop.” Yuki lowered herself to sit cross-legged leaning on the wall. “It’d be so embarrassing. All that — Hokuto is so cute, heart, heart, heart — stuff you’d have on there.
