Trones Wood

One thousand yards east of Montauban lay Bernafay Wood. North east of Bernafay Wood lay Trones Wood, its northern tip pointing towards the higher ground of Delville Wood and Longueval village and its eastern border facing Waterlot Farm and the villages of Ginchy and Guillemont. Unfortunately, this proximity meant that Trones Wood was utterly commanded and overlooked from the north west through an arc of almost 180 degrees round to the east and south. If it could be captured it could only be held with the compliance of the German artillery, or if the German positions in Longueval and Guillemont were overrun. The two woodlands were thus important stepping stones towards the piece by piece advance which Rawlinson was now forced to seek, Haig's hopes for a breakthrough on the 1 July having failed to materialize along the western arm of the battlefield. The two actions which resulted first in the taking of Bernafay Wood and secondly Trones Wood were each marked by tragically and sensationally different circumstances.
