Figure 4.9. Select iPhone messages to include in an email
Another quick way to save a message is to take a screenshot of your phone screen. To do this on an iPhone, simply press the Power button and the Home button at the same time. This will save the screen as an image in your phone’s Photos application. Taking a screenshot will allow you to save the exact view of the screen, including the sender’s name (at the top) and the date and time, if they appear on the screen. However, the image does not save any actual text since it has been turned into an image. That means it cannot be copied and pasted, or searched for individual words.
If you want to export a lot of messages and have more access to your text messages, or want to export and read them in another format (outside of an iPhone), you will need to use a third-party app. Two of the most frequently recommended applications for exporting text messages are also used for other file management: AnyTrans and iMazing. These are popular applications, but they are not free. Many free apps exist, but offer a variety of options. Review the recommendation in the Android section for reviewing and selecting third-party applications before trying out possible tools.
Other Options
If your phone has limited options and you cannot use an application, there are a few basic features that may be used to capture text messages. All smart phones should have the ability to take a screenshot, as described in the last section for iPhones. Search for “Screenshot [your device name]” to find out how to take a picture of your screen on your specific device. Most phones, smart and basic, also allow you to email text messages by adding an email address into the TO: field rather than a phone number.
If you own a basic phone (a phone with fewer features, rather than a “smart” phone), you may be able to save text messages by removing the phone’s SIM card (the identification card stored in the phone) and inserting it into a SIM card reader. SIM card readers cost $30–$35 and look like flash drives with slots for the SIM card. Since there are multiple types of SIM cards and multiple sizes, you will need to make sure to buy the reader that works with your specific card. Saving in this manner is usually more cumbersome than using an app. Some phones may take a mini-SD card, which also requires an adapter or reader that will allow it to be inserted into a computer SD slot. From your phone’s text messaging section, you will need to find the option to save messages to card. Messages will be saved in a basic TXT file, and may lose formatting and other related data.10
TIP: Consider what you will do with messages after backup. Deleting them from your phone after transferring or backing up will free up space and avoid the extra work of backing up the same messages twice.
