Reading

See the Resource Guide at the back of this book for more information about the options that follow.

Lighting is an important component of reading, which requires brighter, more concentrated light and an adjustable flex-arm or gooseneck lamp to direct the light. (See Chapter 2 for the types of lighting most helpful for reading.)

Consult your low vision specialist to determine if devices such as handheld magnifiers, lighted magnifiers, or magnifying reading glasses can help with reading. For example, a handheld magnifier with an LED light might help in reading mail or looking up telephone numbers.

If reading regular print is difficult, consider large-print books. Most major publishing houses produce books in large print, available at retail bookstores and public libraries. Large-print editions of certain periodicals, such as The New York Times and Reader’s Digest, are available by subscription.

An electronic video magnifier (also called a closed-circuit television or CCTV) is a reading device that will project an enlarged image of the print on a page or a document onto a large screen or monitor. A video magnifier allows you to adjust the magnification, brightness, and contrast of the image on the screen. Video magnifiers also offer the option of viewing black letters on a white background or white letters on black. They are available in desktop and handheld models. Your low vision specialist can tell you more about these reading devices, including whether they are appropriate for your needs and specific eye condition.
