Sewing/Fabrics

Another popular medium is fabric. Sewing can provide both artistic and practical projects for fabric; it is a skill that can be used to create new clothing, costumes, accessories, and other items and to repair existing ones. Sewing can be done by hand or with a sewing machine that is human directed and operated (see figure 7.2). There are also specialty machines called sergers, which are useful for sewing and cutting the edges of fabric products so that they do not unravel. Taking the machinery a step further, there are CNC sewing machines that can create sewn items from a program. It is interesting to think of the longevity of sewing, given that it features in some of the earliest examples of making in libraries, going back to 1877 (“A History of Making,” 2013).
