The development of the process is quite exciting. Having landscapes that a user can zoom in and out of to see a landform at various scales is captivating. One of the more exciting ventures involved deploying a large holographic model of Mount Saint Helens in the library. The model was uploaded by someone else to Thingiverse, a repository of 3D printable objects (Thingiverse, n.d.). The author and colleagues had previously made 3D prints of this model, but later ported it to the HoloLens. In this situation, researchers scaled it such that it was a three-meter-tall by ten-meter-diameter hologram. Users of the HoloLens could walk around parts of the base of the volcano (some parts digitally extend into the library’s walls) or walk up the library’s staircase to peer down into the volcano’s caldera.

The use of UAVs, SfM, and holograms is a very quick way to make accurate landscape models. One would expect the technology to be useful in emergencies and complex technical situations. In fact, the US Army has now contracted with Microsoft to develop new systems that utilize the power of the HoloLens (Bloomberg.com 2018). At the University of Oregon campus, there is interest in the HoloLens from faculty and/or students in the departments of business, computer science, geology, geography, neuroscience, and physics, and the library is just the place to allow everyone the opportunity to explore this system. While the technology is in its infancy and will rapidly grow, this chapter provides some examples of research use of the HoloLens, walks readers through many of the steps needed to make and utilize holograms, and lets libraries see the technology, equipment, and expertise that is needed to offer a successful HoloLens program.
