Chapter Twelve
Kiss Flynt? Although the idea appealed to Jessie, they were standing in the middle of Main Street with hundreds of people watching. Not the way she’d imagined her first kiss.
For one thing, a lady wasn’t supposed to kiss a gentleman. She was to wait for him to kiss her. Plus, there was the fact that Flynt was only pretending to court her.
“Go on, Jessie,” Trace hollered. “Don’t keep Flynt waiting.”
She forced herself to look at Flynt, hoping he would give her some indication of how to proceed. He looked as shocked as she felt. No help there.
Well, if Dan’s fiancée could kiss him in full view of the townspeople, she could kiss her make-believe beau, couldn’t she?
Jessie rose on her toes, leaned forward and brushed a kiss on Flynt’s cheek.
There. She’d done it. Now the festivities could go on. And she could tuck that tender memory away to relive later.
A low rumble of disappointment rippled through the crowd.
Well, they could mumble and mutter all they wanted. She’d done her part.
“Come on, Jessie,” Trace called. “Flynt won the race. He deserves a real kiss.”
“The lad’s right. Go ahead and kiss ’im.” The request came from an unknown male voice and was followed by more like it.
She sought encouragement from Flynt, but he just stared at her with wide eyes.
The pressure from the crowd intensified, with more and more urging her to take action.
Well, if she must, she must. It seemed the only way to put an end to the awkwardness.
Since this was to be her first kiss—and quite possibly her last—she would make it count. She grabbed the lapels of Flynt’s leather waistcoat, pulled him toward her, closed her eyes and pressed her mouth to his.
The moment she made contact, the noise of the crowd faded. All she could think about was Flynt and how wonderful it felt to have his firm but supple lips against hers.
Unmoving lips.
He didn’t want this.
She released his lapels and eased back slowly, reluctantly, hoping desperately that she’d been wrong. The man she knew didn’t have it in him to humiliate her in front of the townspeople. There had to be some other explanation for his passivity.
Before she could tear herself away, he cupped her head in his hands and pulled her close. He returned the kiss, flooding her with joy unlike any she’d ever experienced.
She was vaguely aware of a cheer going up from the crowd. She certainly felt like cheering. Flynt was kissing her. Really, truly, thoroughly kissing her.
At that moment it didn’t matter that she wasn’t worthy of such a fine man or that he held saloon girls in contempt. All that mattered was that she was in the arms of the kindest, most thoughtful, most supportive man she’d ever known. A man who was everything she’d ever wanted but she could never call her own.
All too soon Flynt brought the kiss to an end. His hands slid down her neck, over her shoulders and gripped her upper arms. He gazed into her eyes.
