Over the next few days, all James could think about was how he almost kissed Cara. In that moment, it was as if a floodgate opened and all the emotions he had been holding back came flooding into his heart.
He wanted his wife; he wanted her in every way a man could want a woman, but time was not on his side. The remaining crops were at a crucial time in their preparation for harvest. On top of having to plow the section of the farm that had already been harvested, he did not want weeds to grow in it, or risk their spread. Additionally, two of the pigs were due to have babies any day now, and Thomas had caught a cold and Cara was tending to him. The couple had no time to be alone together. The only option James had was to wait and bide his time until he could make his move and show his newfound desire for his wife.
James turned the corner of the field to head up the other direction, when suddenly the plow got stuck. The oxen groaned in complaint as James used the reins to try to push them forward. When it wouldn’t work, James went to the back where the blades were and examined the area. A huge clump of hard dirt was wedged between two of the side blades. He pulled on it, but the obstacle wouldn’t come free. Some of the dirt came off, revealing it was a rock.
Knowing his strength alone wouldn’t do it, James looked for something he could use to leverage the rock. A large stick under a tree by the dirt road caught his eye. That should do the trick.
He quickly ran over and picked it up, then came back to the plow. He pushed one end under the rock, then slowly pushed down on the other. For a moment, he thought it was going to splinter and break off, but luck was on his side. The rock flew free, but so fast and without warning, it smacked James straight in the face, knocking him backwards.
James heard the oxen grunt and start to move, and he rolled to get away, knowing if he was too close his body would meet the end of the blades. Many farmers had died that way, and he didn’t want to be the next. He wasn’t quick enough though, and he felt the piercing pain of something digging into the flesh of his arm.
His scream pierced the afternoon air, causing the oxen to take off even faster than they were already going. He looked down at his arm and saw gushing blood flow out of a deep laceration. It was obvious he needed to wrap the wound, prompting him to yank off his outer shirt and tie it securely around his forearm.
With his good arm, James rolled over and pushed off the ground, climbing to his feet. He stumbled towards the house, grateful that at least he was in the closest field and didn’t have to make it very far.
