Charlie stayed home the next day, wanting to get a handle on her new home. She knew he employed someone once per week to clean, but she wouldn’t mind taking that expense from him. And she really wanted to get used to cooking in the kitchen there. It would be a new experience for her to have so many modern conveniences.
She and Abel walked together toward the mercantile, and he walked in with her, introducing her to the proprietor as his wife. “Please let her charge anything on my account.”
The man, who Abel had introduced as Mr. Walker, nodded. “Happy to help out in any way I can.”
“She has a pretty long list she’s made. You might want to have the order delivered.” He kissed Charlie’s cheek as he left to go open his store, mumbling under his breath about hoping he still had customers after being gone so long.
Charlie enjoyed wandering around the store, and she found several things that she added to her already-extensive list. Going to the front, she had Mr. Walker add everything up and put it in crates.
“As soon as my son, Joshua, gets back from his delivery, I’ll send him to your house with your purchases.”
“Thank you, Mr. Walker!” Charlie was excited to get home with her purchases and start baking. There were so many things she could do while she waited for the delivery, though. She would clean every inch of the house. As she’d wandered through, she realized the woman who came in once per week only cleaned the rooms that were used often. She wanted her entire house to be spotless, and she was going to make it happen.
As she approached the house, she saw some bright blond hair on her doorstep, and she groaned mentally. What does Veronica want now?
She got to the door and opened it, knowing the other woman was following her. “How can I help you, Veronica? I thought you weren’t coming over until four to help me cook.”
Veronica sighed, a tear trickling down her cheek. “Kane thought I should come over and learn to clean as well. He said he’s been doing too much for too long, and he was done pampering me.” She shook her head. “Who’s going to pamper me if my husband refuses? It’s ridiculous.”
Charlie frowned. “Well, maybe you could learn to pamper him instead of expecting him to do it for you?”
Veronica immediately laughed, until she realized that Charlie wasn’t joking. “Why would I do that?”
“Because he’s your husband, and he works hard to provide you a roof over your head and clothes to wear, and you need to respect him for that.”
“Who could respect Kane?” Veronica walked into the parlor and sat down in the same chair she’d occupied the day before.
“I hope you don’t expect me to sit around keeping you company all day,” Charlie said. “I need to get started on giving this house a thorough cleaning, and I want to bake a few loaves of bread and a cake for our dessert.
