Chapter Six
All that week, Ethel worked on apples. She made applesauce, apple pie filling, and jelly. She felt like apples were coming out her ears by Saturday evening, when she served an apple jelly roll to Walt.
âItâs not as pretty as the others, but it tastes just as good,â was his response.
âItâs sweet, so you love it. I understand,â she said.
He grinned. âAnd itâs so much better when you ice it or add whipped cream.â He caught her hand and pulled her into his lap, even though she was attempting to clear the table.
âI try to do at least one of those,â she said. âIâve thought about a runny icing or super thick whipped cream, so you could dip it. Does that sound good?â
âOh, yes!â He kissed her cheek. âWhen I first saw you, I was convinced you wouldnât be able to do all the cooking and all the cleaning and still attend your wifely duties, but you are simply amazing.â
She grinned at him, not sure if she should be annoyed or flattered. âI need to get the table cleared and the dishes done. Then I need to decide which of the canned goods Iâm taking to church tomorrow to trade.â
He frowned. âAre you sure you canât just take some money and buy what the other women made?â
âI know of at least one family who wants some of the raspberry jam I put up. I promise I wonât get rid of all of it. And I worked all week on the apples, but there are still plenty more I could harvest.â
He grinned. âI do like all the apples youâve canned. And taking one with me every morning to work has been helping a lot too.â
âIâm going to make apple muffins for breakfast in the morning. Iâll take an extra for before church, and jerky and a muffin for after church.â
âHow did I get so lucky to find a woman like you?â he asked.
She laughed and went into the kitchen to see to the dishes. The cellar had shelves along each wall, and the shelves were filling up with all of the canned goods she was putting up. When she put in a kitchen garden the next year, she knew sheâd need a lot more.
Filling a basket with the jams, jellies, and pie fillings, she added a jelly roll sheâd made just for good trading. Hopefully, she would be able to come home with lots of things she could use to make Walt treats, though he did seem to think he should have jelly rolls with every meal. She wasnât certain it had been a good idea to make it for him the first time. Now he seemed to think he needed it.
Once the basket was ready, she set it beside the front door, so it would be ready to take to church the next morning. âIs there anything in that basket that shouldnât be?â he asked.
âI think we might get better trades by trading just one of the jelly rolls. Itâs made with raspberry so I can make plenty more just like it,â she said.
