Chapter Seven

Daniel stormed out of the house, letting the door slam shut behind him. As soon as he heard the loud slamming, he was contrite. What was he thinking treating a new wife this way? But why was she being so difficult?

He stomped through the snow into the barn, plopping himself down on the milking stool. Sighing loudly, he spoke to the animals. “This isn’t how I was planning on spending my wedding night.” He crossed his legs at the ankles staring up at the dark ceiling. “I can’t believe she’s being so stubborn.”

He rubbed his hands over his face in frustration. He’d been looking forward to being married and having children. Instead, he’d married a woman who would deceive him to get out of her small town. Why would she do that? What had he done to deserve this?

He took a deep breath, trying to get his anger under control. After a moment, he realized that wasn’t enough, and bowed his head. “God, I don’t know what to do. I married a woman who lied to me. I want to have a real marriage and children, but I don’t know how to go about it. She’s drawn a line that I can’t cross. Please, help me to know what I need to do to be a good husband to her. Help me to get over my anger so I can apologize to her. In your son’s name I pray. Amen.”

He slowly walked back toward the house, planning on talking to her and apologizing for his anger. He still wasn’t pleased with the situation, but he would never have the marriage he wanted if he continued to yell at her. When he entered the house, he realized she’d gone to bed. He listened for a moment outside her door to see if he could hear her moving around, but there was no sound.

Quietly he went to his own bed, feeling badly for the way he’d exploded at her. Whether or not she’d deceived him, they were married and would stay married, so he needed to find a way to make the most of it. Tomorrow, he’d be the best husband he could be, and do better.

Margaret was up before the sun, going into the kitchen to start breakfast before he woke up. His door was wide open and she realized he was up before her. For a moment she wondered if he’d slept in his room last night, but looking inside, she could see his bed was unmade.

She rummaged through the kitchen for a moment trying to decide what to prepare, and then she remembered the bread Millie had made. It was starting to get old, so she decided to use it up by making French Bread, something her mother had made to use up old bread rather than throw it away.

Maggie set the large frying pan on the fire and added a small amount of butter for grease. She pulled down a mixing bowl and got the milk and eggs from the counter where, apparently, Daniel had already set them earlier that morning.
