Chapter 7

“Rose,” said Lyall, as if all the breath had been knocked out of him.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her eyes welling up with tears.

“Only because she’s been caught,” said Alfred.

“Excuse us while we take a moment alone,” Lyall said to him, walking into the next room.

Rose followed him, closing the door behind her.

Lyall paced the room, distress contorting his face.

“Rose, I don’t understand,” he said. “You’re married?”

“Yes,” she said.

“To whom?” he asked. “Why did you keep this a secret?”

“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t understand!” she said.

“Who?” he asked. “Who is it?”

Rose took a deep breath, knowing the moment she had so long dreaded had finally arrived. She nodded back toward the kitchen.

“What? What do you mean?” said Lyall, frustration and confusion heavy in his voice.

“I mean that he is my husband,” said Rose, lowering her voice and stepping closer to Lyall, not wanting Alfred to overhear. “Pastor Jones. Except that is not his name.”

“Pastor Jones is your husband?”

“Alfred Turnbull,” she said. “He’s not a Pastor.”

“So you mean to tell me that the man sitting in the kitchen telling me he wants to start a new church is your husband, Alfred Turnbull?”

“Yes,” she said.

“Why on earth would he do that?” he said.

“Because he’s trying to trick you,” she replied.

“This is crazy.”

He looked her up and down, his brow furrowed with worry and stress.

“How do I know I can trust you?” he said. “You only just tell me now that you have a husband? I thought we agreed we could tell each other everything.”

He sat down on a chair and put his head in his hands. Rose stepped over toward him and touched him on the shoulder, wishing she could take all the weight from his heart onto her own.

“Please don’t touch me,” he said gently. “I need a moment to think.”

Rose stood back against the wall, knowing it was all about to fall apart and trying to reconcile herself with that truth before it unfolded. The dream was over.

Lyall stood up and looked at her, both suspicion and hope weaving an inharmonious dance in his eyes.

“Why don’t we step into the kitchen?” he said.

He held the door open for her and followed her after she went through.

“Alfred,” said Lyall.

“I’m sure you’re mistaken,” said Alfred. “My name is Thomas, remember? Pastor Thomas Jones.”

“Rose… or is your name really Rose?” said Lyall.

“Yes, it is,” said Rose, feeling as if she were being stabbed in the heart.

“Rose says that your name is Alfred Turnbull and that you’re her husband,” Lyall said. “Is this true?”

Alfred stood up and Rose took a step back instinctively. He looked directly at her, then put his hands on his head as if receiving a message again.

“I’m afraid you’ve got a bigger problem than you know here, Mister Fisher,” said Alfred. “Not only is she a married woman, but she’s also a liar and deceiver. I can sense… there are many devils and sins within her.”

Lyall looked between Alfred and Rose, clearly having no idea what to believe. Rose looked at him pleadingly.
