The homestead looked lonelier than ever to Matthew as he pulled the wagon up to the barn and unhitched the horse. Maggie nickered and bumped his shoulder as if she knew he was upset. Maybe she did.

He stroked her muzzle and gave her an apple from the basket he’d fixed for Carolyn and himself. They’d never touched the food, and now his stomach rumbled because he hadn’t eaten lunch.

For a brief second, when he entered the house, he thought his home had been ransacked, but then he remembered how Carolyn had thrown most of the decorations out the back door. He almost chuckled, but his heart was too heavy. He’d gone from thinking he had a bright future with a lovely woman to having nothing at all in the space of one day.

The dishes from breakfast still sat in the sink. That, along with his solitude, caused his appetite to flee, but he forced himself to eat a sandwich from the basket and then set to work cleaning up the kitchen and putting the house in order. Without the pillows, curtains and blankets, the house looked more barren than ever, but he knew that it was more likely due to the fact that he was suffering the loss of his would-be wife, a woman he’d come to love through the course of a year-long correspondence.

And he did love her. He hadn’t had the guts to say it to her, and now he would probably never have the chance. She wanted a family. He couldn’t give her one, and he wouldn’t ask her to give up her dreams for him. Although he’d originally thought that bringing her to Laramie would help her to see that she belonged with him, her behavior there showed him differently. Better to let her go and find another man who could give her the future she wanted, even if it broke his heart.

Exasperated, he let loose a noise that was half-way between a sigh and a growl. “Look at me,” he said to himself. “A grown man about to lose it because he lost a woman that should’ve never been his in the first place. He washed the dishes with more vigor than necessary and made a thorough sweep of the entire place. When he got to the bedroom, he paused near his bed. Carolyn had slept here last night, and he was sure that he could detect a soft, lemony scent. He picked up a pillow and held it to his nose. Yes, it was there.

Angrily, he threw the pillow back down on the bed. Again, he railed against God.

“Why dangle such a gift in front of my face just to take it away?” he cried out. “I want a family, Lord. I want children, but if I can’t have them, then I would be happy with a wife. Am I meant to be alone? Is that Your plan for me? Then why did You let Carolyn write to me? You should have just let my ad go unanswered!”

It was easy to tell God what to do, what was best for him.
