I had admired Henry Hart’s erudition and what appeared to be his avuncular demeanor. When Reilly became editor he and I became friends—so I thought. But once he retired he became Mr. Hyde, joined by both Hart and Giroux. Some trio. I think Reilly regretted retiring—he was not happy and there was his drinking. . . . Their constant petty interference became impossible to deal with every week and I decided I needed a fresh start.

I am pleased with a few things I accomplished while there—bringing the physical look of the magazine into the twentieth century, establishing the first two annual awards ceremonies—Myrna Loy and Gloria Swanson.

So no regrets. The one thing this farm boy should have done the very first day on the job was to arrive not only carrying a Louis Vuitton briefcase, but also a shovel.47
