HOW TO CREATE SUCCESS IN JOB APPLICATIONS

Having coached hundreds of people on getting the professional positions they applied for, I will use this chapter to summarize the techniques given. No matter what form or method both your application and interview take, here are some tips, some of which you may not read anywhere else.

Don’t use formulaic applications, do not write borrow from other people’s applications or copy what you saw elsewhere. Use your own unique words authentically. If they do not like who you authentically are, you should not be working there anyway.

Use the word “you” more than twice as much as the word “I”. Put yourself in their shoes and consider what they want, what they are looking for. Balance telling them what you want with telling them what you can do for them.

Remember that you are not a beggar, you are a service-provider. Keep this in mind. Don’t fall into the mentality of being “happy just to get a job”. Tell yourself that you are there to help them instead of expecting them to help you. Summarize why you are the best person for the job.

Speak slowly and make pauses. Have your movements and your speech be somewhat deliberate. Reduce reactiveness.

On interview day, dress in a manner that is similar to the companies culture. If you do not know how people there dress (casually or formally), find out.

Let go of wanting to be liked and instead like them. Instead of thinking “what do they think of me?” think “What do I think of them?”

As you sit across from the interviewee radiate appreciation. Your presence is more important than your words.

Know your stuff. If necessary learn certain key concepts and figures by heart so that they are readily available when called upon.

Enjoy the whole process. It’s fun to show your best sides.
