In X-ray computed tomography, the absorption of a parallel beam of radiation by the object under study is measured at a detector. According to the Beer–Lambert–Bouguer law, the intensity of the radiation I that has passed through a layer of material having a thickness y and a linear absorption coefficient μ, when measured at the detector is

where I0 is the initial X-ray intensity. When the object under investigation is composed of different materials with different μ, the term in the exponential function becomes a linear integral over coefficients μ along the line of radiation passing through the object, i.e.:
