Chapter Two

“You’re done already? I was expecting more fireworks.”

Cassandra, who had been so busy cursing Lucian’s name she hadn’t even realized she had visitors, looked up into the laughing brown eyes of her friend Sloan Wakefield.

Sloan’s official title was Operations Manager, but those words didn’t even begin to get at what Sloan actually did at Silver and for each and every person who worked there. As far as Cassandra could see, Sloan’s job was, well, everything.

She made sure the team had whatever they needed, often anticipating what those needs would be before they told her, made sure everyone got where they needed to be, and did it all without breaking a sweat.

From the outside looking in, Cassandra suspected most people wouldn’t think curvy, five-foot-nothing Sloan, who was as sweet, friendly, and kind as anyone Cassandra had ever met, had any role to play in this company of hypermacho mercenaries. Foolish on their part. Sloan was the lifeblood of Silver Industries even if she didn’t know it.

“I decided to cut him some slack,” Cassandra finally replied, waving Sloan into the room. Not entirely accurate, but Cassandra couldn’t very well say she had essentially stomped off in a huff when Lucian had suggested she didn’t care about the company. Even now, she certainly couldn’t admit that she hadn’t fully recovered from the encounter, or the feelings, not all or even most of them negative, that Lucian stirred up.

Sloan chuckled and then ambled into the room, the wedge-heeled shoes she preferred giving her a few extra inches of height. She settled into the chair across from Cassandra’s desk and crossed her legs at the ankle, the movement sweet and quintessentially Sloan. As was the little glint in her eye, one Cassandra didn’t miss and one she suspected Sloan didn’t want her to.

Cassandra prepared herself for the coming onslaught.

“What’s got you feeling so charitable today?” Sloan asked, face still lifted with a bright smile, as she tucked a few of her thin braids behind her ear. Had Cassandra not known Sloan, that smile might have been reassuring. But Cassandra did know Sloan, and she knew that those beaming pearly whites and bright eyes were deceptive and that her benign, companionable question was bait, an attempt to drag Cassandra into what seemed to be Sloan’s favorite topic. And for some reason, Cassandra couldn’t keep herself from answering.

“I’m not being charitable, just”—Cassandra waved her hand in the air, searching for the right word—“recognizing the nobility of his intentions.” Which was one hundred percent true. She believed in the work Silver Industries did, believed in Lucian as a matter of fact, not that he’d ever believe or accept that.

She looked at Sloan, watching her friend’s face for a reaction, one that came quickly. Though she still smiled, Cassandra didn’t miss the skepticism illuminating her plump cheeks, so Cassandra continued.

“Is that impossible to believe?” she said, dropping the pen she held and leaning back in her chair, unable to take the smile off her own face.

“Of course not.
